USS Orion (AS-18)

Postby sam9858 » Thu Jul 15, 2004 10:02 am

Hello Shipmates,

I noticed that the Orion or Onion as some called her was not accounted for yet. With her long years of service to the fleet, I would expect a number of fellow DP's to be around. I serverd aboard her while she was in Charleston, SC (1979) thru her yard over-haul, and then overseas to La Madelana, Italy until (1981). I was a DP3 when I arrived, and a DP2 when I departed, and received the Naval Achievement Medal for software I wrote while on-board.
I would love to hear from some of my old shop-mates from the ADP shop. Drop me a line. :)
Thanks Shipmates,

Scot

The hull number for the U.S.S. Orion was AS-18. AS-40 was the hull number for the U.S.S. Frank Cable.

What was I thinking

I have a picture of the Orion in a photo album with the crew on the forecastle making the number 40 for her 40th birthday. I think I must have been looking at that as I wrote the original posting. I stand corrected.

Oh, yes... The Onion (walking onboard brought tears to your eyes). Although La Madd was a pretty good time. 1986 - 1988.

Hi All.

I was on the Orion from January '71 through late '74 as a DS2. I maintained the AN/UYK5(v) system in ADP. Learned a lot about coding in Assembler (LASS), BASIC, COBOL and - ugh - FIANA reports.
